First Full Face Transplant in the United States

We did a podcast some time ago about face transplants. Medical science is pretty remarkable these days and I think the episode really highlighted some of the breakthroughs in facial reconstruction, or in this case, full transplant. At the time, there had only been one such operation performed – for a French woman who lost her face due to a very unfortunate incident with her dog. It was pretty disturbing to say the least and we heard from a lot of you who had a hard time getting through the episode.

Flash forward to Dallas, Texas and a man named Dallas Wiens. He was injured on the job when his face got too close to a high voltage line. Scary stuff. Last week in Boston, Wiens was fortunate enough to find a donor and get the surgery performed. After the accident, the only recognizable facial feature that remained was his mouth. There is a substantial recovery period and afterward, Dallas won’t look much like he did before. But he will look like a human being again, something his grandfather calls “a miracle.” Let’s all out out the good energy to Dallas as he recuperates.
